How Ho’oponopono Helped Heal My Body
A deeply personal reflection on illness, awakening, and learning to speak to the body with love. In this post, I share how Ho’oponopono helped me shift from fear and health anxiety into trust, healing, and a loving relationship with my body—one conversation at a time.

Extreme illness was the catalyst for my spiritual awakening. I’ve shared parts of this journey in my other blog posts, but this piece felt important to tell on its own.

For years, my life revolved around being unwell. I tried everything—at least ten different healing modalities, therapies, supplements, and approaches. I spent so much money searching for answers, believing healing had to come from somewhere outside of me.

Ironically, the thing that truly helped heal my body cost nothing at all.

It was Ho’oponopono.

What Is Ho’oponopono?

Ho’oponopono is an ancient healing practice rooted in forgiveness, responsibility, and love. It is most widely known through Hawaiian tradition, where it was used to restore harmony within families and communities.

According to some spiritual teachings, Ho’oponopono is believed to be far older than recorded Hawaiian history. It is said to have been brought to Hawaii by survivors of Lemuria—a highly evolved ancient civilization believed to have existed tens of thousands of years ago. Lemuria is often described as a heart-centered society that lived in deep harmony with nature, the Earth, and the body.

In this context, Ho’oponopono can be considered an ancient remembrance practice—one that may be thousands, if not tens of thousands, of years old—designed to restore balance between consciousness, the body, and the greater whole.

At its simplest, Ho’oponopono is the repetition of four phrases:

I’m sorry.
Please forgive me.
Thank you.
I love you.

The belief behind this practice is that our inner world is reflected in our outer experiences. By taking responsibility—not blame, but responsibility—for what we experience, we create space for healing. These words help clear subconscious memories, emotional imprints, and energetic blocks that may be stored within the body.

It sounds simple. And yet, it is profoundly powerful.

How I Found It (and Ignored It)

I first came across Ho’oponopono by chance on social media. A woman I followed on Instagram shared how she used it to heal all aspects of her life—physical, emotional, and spiritual. Something about it deeply resonated with me.

At the time, I didn’t realize it was my higher self and spirit team sending me breadcrumbs.

Months passed. Then more months.
I kept seeing Ho’oponopono everywhere… and still didn’t use it.

Meanwhile, I was over three years into chronic illness. Childhood trauma was slowly healing, my body would improve, and then symptoms would return. I remember thinking, What am I missing? Why does this keep coming back?

Then I started seeing content about talking to the body to heal it—speaking to cells, organs, and systems with love and intention. Teachings from Dolores Cannon and Dr. Joe Dispenza echoed the same message: the body responds to consciousness.

At that point, I stopped thinking “algorithm” and started thinking signs.

The Moment Everything Shifted

One day, I remembered Ho’oponopono—the practice I had seen a year earlier and never tried. I decided to use the words, but this time I spoke directly to my body.

What came next was my first true realization.

I saw how perfect my body truly is.

Not perfect in appearance, but perfect in function. Perfect in its intelligence. Perfect in how hard it works every moment to keep me alive—despite how critical I had been of it for years.

So every day, I began saying to my body:

“I’m sorry I didn’t see how perfect you are.
I’m so sorry, my body.
Thank you for showing me this realization.
I love you with all my heart.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

After a day or two, something surprising happened: the chronic diarrhea I’d been dealing with every day for over a year just stopped. As I kept practicing Ho‘oponopono, my digestion slowly settled down. My bowel movements became more regular, and I could eat foods I hadn’t been able to tolerate in years. Before long, I started feeling normal again — something I honestly thought might never happen.

I later learned how closely the gut and nervous system are connected, and how long-term stress can keep the body stuck in a kind of constant overdrive. Ho‘oponopono, with its simple repetition and focus on forgiveness and self-soothing, seemed to help my system relax. As my body shifted out of fight-or-flight and into a calmer, “rest and digest” mode, my digestion seemed to follow along.

Before this, every medication I’d been prescribed for my digestion eventually stopped working, and doctors couldn’t explain why. But after practicing Ho‘oponopono, the medications started working again. It felt like my body had finally stopped resisting and was able to accept the help it was being given.

When I Started Asking My Body for Help

From that moment on, I began speaking to my body whenever something felt off.

Once, I had an eyelash stuck in my eye for over an hour. Frustrated and worried, I finally said, “Body, please make this go away.” I lay down, and ten minutes later my eye felt normal. I still don’t know where the eyelash went—but the discomfort was gone.

Another time, I felt a cold sore coming on. Normally, they blister and last up to two weeks even with treatment. I asked my body to heal it and only used Vaseline. This time, it never blistered and faded within days.

Then there was the scratchy throat that usually led to sinus infections and antibiotics. I asked my body to make it go away.

The next day, it was gone.

All true stories.

A New Relationship With My Body

Four years ago, I lived with extreme health anxiety and daily panic attacks. I constantly feared something terrible was about to happen to my body. No one who knew me then would recognize the relationship I have with my body now.

Today, I trust it completely.

People often ask why I don’t catch all the illnesses going around. My answer is simple: I talk to my body. I thank it. I remind it how perfect it is.

It may sound unbelievable—but it works.

When I do get sick now, symptoms pass quickly and gently. And even if something does arise, I know my body is always working with me, not against me.

If You Want to Heal Your Body

The first step is this:

Truly see your body’s perfection.

Even when it feels broken.
Even when it feels sick.
If you are breathing—your body is doing its job perfectly.

Tell it that.

Apologize for years of criticism.
Thank it for never giving up on you.
Tell it how much you love it.

Then ask it—gently—to heal what needs healing.

The shifts may be subtle at first. But the more you build this relationship, the more miraculous your experiences can become.

Our bodies listen to every thought we think and every word we speak.

Your body is your first best friend.
Your greatest gift from God.

Love it deeply—and it will reflect that love back to you.

A Gentle Invitation

If this story resonated with you, I invite you to try Ho’oponopono today.

Place a hand on your heart or on any part of your body that needs love, and slowly repeat:

I’m sorry.
Please forgive me.
Thank you.
I love you.

Notice how your body responds—not just physically, but emotionally and energetically.

If you feel called, I’d love for you to share your experience in the comments or pass this post on to someone who may need it. Healing is even more powerful when we remember we’re not alone.

With love,
Ish

Author’s Note

This practice didn’t replace medical care for me — it simply supported my healing in ways nothing else had. I’ve learned to honor both intuitive and practical support, and to choose what feels right for me in each season of healing.

Ho’oponopono is just one way of talking to the body. There are many other practices that do this too, like guided meditations, visualization, somatic work, breathwork, and other mind–body approaches. Everyone connects through a different doorway, and that’s part of the beauty of it.

Healing also looks different for everyone. What I’ve shared here is simply my lived experience — not a promise or a prescription. Please take what resonates, leave what doesn’t, and trust your own inner guidance above all else.

A gentle, spiritually guided introduction to an alternative pathway for healing suppressed childhood sexual abuse.
